Welcome to the community of Rijssen-Holten!

The community Rijssen-Holten was founded on 1 January 2001, and was the result of a merger between the former communities of Rijssen and Holten. Surrounded by the beautiful green region of ‘Twente’ and the richly forested ‘Sallandse Heuvelrug’, our community provides home, work and pleasant surroundings for over 36.500 residents.

Modern business
People in our community are used to being active, and this shows. Where once brick ovens, textile factories and farms dominated the community, modern businesses have now taken over. Companies of national and international importance, such as construction companies, meat production, steel factories, packaging corporations, travel and transport companies, and also service-providing organisations have manifested established themselves in our community.

Powerful incentives
The economic development of our community is strongly influenced by the proximity of the national highway A1 and the railway track that leads from the west of the Netherlands into Germany. The powerful entrepreneurial climate improves this economic development. The community council encourages and supports new initiatives. For example, new businesses can locate themselves in one of the four “starters’ buildings”, spread over four perfectly equipped commercial areas in Holten and Rijssen. All in all, it is not surprising that our community has a low unemployment rate.

Good shopping
The two community centers, Rijssen and Holten, are best charactarised as friendly shopping areas - both have a large variety of shops, free parking areas and active shop-owners’ association. All this contributes to the fact that our community is a populair shopping area in the region. The shops vary from large department stores to privately owned local shops.
Markets on Monday, Fridays and Saturdays are an addition to the regular stores. Many people are drawn to the community because of the annual tradition of fairs, flea markets, the opening of the Triathlon Holten and the locally famous ‘Keunefeesten’.

Enjoyable living
Living in our community revolves around the concepts ‘space, variety and safety’. In every neighbourhood, one can find different types of housing. This results in a varied population in all the neighbourhoods. In the community centres as well as in the surrounding neighbourhoods, green areas are considered to be very important. This creates a balance between dynamics and peacefulness. It also connects well to the natural surroundings of the community.

In order to improve and guarantee the well-being of our residents, the community provides several services. Many sports clubs, cultural unions and other unions provide the necessary social contacts and leisure. The educational offer is rich in its diversity and includes schools of many different convictions.
The community of Rijssen-Holten believes safety, employment and leisure opportunities are very important for both residents, and guests. Therefore, traffic safety, public safety and maintaining the community are high on the agenda of the community council.

Sightseeing
The community of Rijssen-Holten has many interesting sights. One of the most famous ones is the old ”Schildkerk” (Schild-church) constructed in 775 BC. There is also the “Pelmolen”, a mill that had been used as oil-refinery up until the year 1925. East of the city centre lies the historical park of Rijssen. In 2003, the only international fire department museum opened here. The windmill “De Hegeman” and the OAD-museum (a well known bus company in the Netherlands) are just two of the impressive sights in Holten. In the old Town Hall you can also find the “Chamber of History” (where local history is documented and ancient objects are displayed). The museum “Nature Diorama” gives an overall impression of flora and fauna on the “Holterberg”.

Leisure activities
For everyone who loves nature, the town of Rijssen-Holten has much to offer. Beautiful natural areas are, for example, the Hollands Schwarzwald’, de ‘Rijsserberg’, het ‘Rijssenseveld’ en ‘De Ravijntjes’. The most beautiful area of all is without a doubt the national park “De Sallandse Heuvelrug”. This large natural area where moors, forests, pine trees and sand dune areas complement each other in magnificent ways. It is therefore understandable that leisure time takes an important position in our town. Campsites, hotels and cottages are established in many places without dominating the site. Dynamics and hospitality are very important in our community but in the meantime we also strive to maintain the beautiful character of our natural surroundings.
